Winter Travel Checklist - Keep Your Home Safe While Away
For many Canadians, winter is the perfect time to escape the cold and head out of province or out of the country for a much-needed break. Before you leave, it’s important to make sure your home is protected. From frozen pipes to break-ins, extended absences can increase risks. With a bit of planning, you can enjoy your trip knowing your home is secure and your insurance coverage is intact.

1. Review Your Home Insurance Policy

If your home will be empty, your insurance may require special permission, an endorsement, or specific safety steps to stay valid. Before you head out, review your policy to confirm:

  • How long your home can be left unoccupied
  • What actions are required to keep your coverage active
  • Whether regular check-ins by someone you trust are needed
  • Planning ahead can help you avoid coverage gaps or denied claims.
2. Tell a Trusted Neighbour You’ll Be Away

Even with smart technology, having human oversight is invaluable. When you’re away in winter, a trusted neighbour, family member, or friend should check the inside and outside of your home a few times a week (about every 3 days).

  • Walk around the property and make a video
  • Bring in mail or packages
  • Check for leaks or damage
  • Contact you if something seems off
3. Prevent Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes are one of the most common winter home insurance claims and one of the most avoidable.

  • Shut off the main water supply and drain your pipes before leaving.
  • If you prefer not to shut off the water, install a smart water leak detector and automatic shut-off valve. These devices can alert you to temperature drops, moisture, or leaks and stop water flow before significant damage occurs.
  • Keep your home heated to a safe minimum temperature (typically around 15°C/60°F).
4. Arrange Snow Removal

  • A snow-covered driveway and walkway are clear signs that no one is home.
  • Hire a neighbour or professional service to clear snow and ice while you’re away. This not only improves safety and curb appeal, but it also helps avoid liability if someone slips on your property.
5. Manage Your Mail and Deliveries

An overflowing mailbox or packages on the doorstep signal vacancy.

  • Set up Canada Post mail forwarding when possible.
  • Remember: not all mail can be forwarded for anything that can’t, arrange for a trusted friend or neighbour to pick it up
  •  Pause subscriptions or deliveries if they aren’t needed during your absence.
6. Install Smart Cameras and Home Monitoring

  • Smart doorbells and cameras let you check in on your home from anywhere.
  • Many systems offer motion alerts, two-way audio, and professional monitoring options.
  • Visible cameras also act as an effective deterrent to potential intruders.
7. Upgrade Smoke, CO, and Flood Protection

Modern safety devices provide better peace of mind:

  • Smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors send alerts directly to your phone.
  • Install a battery-backup sump pump to help prevent basement flooding during heavy rain or thaw periods, especially helpful if the power goes out while you’re away.

8. Secure Outdoor Property

High winds and heavy snowfall can cause damage if items are left unsecured. Make sure:

  • Outdoor furniture is tied down or stored
  • Decorations are removed
  • Tools, ladders, and equipment are locked away
9. Use Timers for Indoor and Outdoor Lighting

  • Light timers, or smart lighting systems, help your home look lived-in.
  • Program them to turn on and off at random intervals rather than the same time every day, which appears more natural.
10. Prepare for Weather Events

Winter storms are unpredictable. Before leaving:

  • Unplug unnecessary electronic
  • Remove perishables from the fridge
  • Ensure your furnace and smoke detectors are working
  • Check that windows and doors are fully sealed and locked
Leaving home in the winter doesn’t have to be stressful. With some preparation, you can relax and enjoy your trip knowing your home is protected. A few proactive steps now can prevent costly damage and ensure your coverage is in good standing.
