As warmer weather arrives, motorcycles return to Ontario roads in greater numbers. While riding can be an enjoyable and efficient way to travel, motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable in collisions. Unlike drivers in enclosed vehicles, riders have little protection beyond their helmets and gear.
At EasyInsure, we believe motorcycle safety is everyone’s responsibility. Whether you ride a motorcycle or drive a car, your decisions on the road can make the difference between a close call and a tragic accident.
2024 - A Record Year for Motorcycle Fatalities in Ontario
According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), 57 motorcyclists lost their lives on OPP-patrolled roads in 2024, making it the deadliest year for motorcyclists in Ontario in more than two decades. As of May 2026, this remains the most recent full-year statistic released by the OPP. Police emphasized that the leading causes were well-known and largely preventable, and common contributing factors were:
- Excessive speed
- Losing control
- Failing to yield the right of way
- Improper passing
- Driver inattention
Importantly, 18 of the riders killed in 2024 were not at fault, highlighting how vulnerable motorcyclists are even when they are riding responsibly.
How Drivers Can Help Keep Motorcyclists Safe
Drivers of passenger vehicles play a critical role in preventing motorcycle collisions.
- Look twice before turning or changing lanes
- Give riders extra space
- Use your signals early
- Be patient at intersections
- Avoid distractions
Safe Riding Habits for Motorcyclists
- Ride within your limits (be aware of speed and overconfidence)
- Wear proper safety gear
- Drive only when conditions are safe to do so
- Stay visible
- Leave a safety buffer
- Take rider training (consider a refresher course and advanced safety instruction)
Motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility.
Drivers must remain alert and patient, while riders must make smart, defensive choices every time they hit the road.
The encouraging news is that most motorcycle collisions are preventable. By working together, we can help ensure that everyone gets home safely.
