Ignoring a Vehicle Recall Could Cost More Than You Think
A recall means your vehicle has a known safety defect. Manufacturers are legally obligated to fix these defects at no cost to you. Whether it’s faulty airbags, brakes, seat belts, or engine components, ignoring a recall puts you and others at risk. Even minor issues can escalate into dangerous situations if left unaddressed.

According to Transport Canada, more than one in five vehicles currently on Canadian roads, approximately 20%, have an unresolved safety recall. In absolute terms, this amounts to an estimated 6.6 million vehicles still affected by recalls that haven’t been resolved.

Consequences of Ignoring a Recall

  • Safety Risks: The most obvious consequence is increased risk of an accident. A faulty airbag that doesn’t deploy or brakes that fail could result in life-threatening injuries.
  • Liability Concerns: If you’re involved in an accident caused by an unrepaired recall, your insurance company may investigate. Ignoring a recall could limit your coverage or impact how your claim is handled.
  • Financial Costs: Beyond insurance complications, the cost of injuries, vehicle damage, or lawsuits could fall heavily on your shoulders.
Recalls and Resale Value

A vehicle with an outstanding recall can be harder to sell. Many buyers and dealerships check recall databases, and unresolved recalls lower trust and market value. A completed repair ensures your vehicle is compliant, safer, and more attractive to potential buyers.

Accidents and Ignored Recalls

If an accident happens and it’s proven that the cause was an unresolved recall, the situation becomes more complicated. Legal liability could shift toward you for failing to take corrective action. Insurance may not cover damages as expected, leaving you financially exposed. In some cases, ignoring a recall could even be considered negligence.

Protect Yourself and Others

Responding to recall notices is free and critical to your safety. Check with Transport Canada’s recall database or your manufacturer’s website for updates. Getting repairs done protects not just your vehicle’s value, but more importantly, the lives of everyone on the road.
